VMware Server is a virtualization product that makes it possible to partition a single physical server into multiple virtual machines. VMware server works with Windows, Solaris, Linux and Netware, any or all of which can be used concurrently on the same hardware.
With VMware Server 1.0 (the current official version as of March 2008), a virtual machine can be built once and deployed multiple times in diverse environments. VMware Server facilitates software testing in virtual machines without installation and configuration. Patches and experimental operating systems can be tested as well. Legacy applications and operating systems can be run in virtual machines that take advantage of state-of-the-art infrastructures.
The VMware Server 2.0 beta allows for configuring permissions to access virtual machines for various purposes to meet the needs of diverse users. Selected virtual machines can be automatically started when VMware Server starts. Support is provided for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Red Hat Enterprise, Linux 5 and Ubuntu 7.10 in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. If 64-bit hardware is available, 64-bit guest operating systems can be run on it. For enhanced Linux performance, transparent paravirtualization is possible; a single binary version of the operating system can run on native hardware or in paravirtualized mode. Support is provided for up to 8 GB of RAM, up to 10 virtual network interface cards and up to two VSMP processors per virtual machine.
